"The Corner Room" started out as a Christmas gift for my wife, Amber. She works late, so I figured that some lullabies might help her out-of-whack circadian rhythm. I released four of the songs right before Christmas as a way to make them available to her wherever.
I loved recording, despite the fact my studios (corner rooms) are my bedroom and a hidden practice room at university. After recording the first four songs, I kept having more and more ideas and, likely to the chagrin of my downstairs neighbors, I kept recording.
Though I struggle to classify my music to a single genre, I do try to be transparent; a word that ran through my head constantly while recording was "raw." Following jazz traditions, I typically listen and record several takes over the same progression, but, ultimately, what comes out of the horn, the piano, or the guitar is what it is.
Ultimately, I feel this album serves its purpose as a lullaby well. Additionally, I feel it is a great album to study to, as it is non-distracting and doesn't have lyrics. If others are interested, I am considering transcribing some of the songs and publishing the music. If you're interested in this sheet music, you can contact me here.
